Lillian A. Tharney, 98, of Lawrenceville, died Friday, Jan. 31, at Tandem Health Care Center in Lawrenceville.
Ms. Tharney lived in Springfield, Mass., before moving to Monmouth Junction where she resided from 1938 to 1970. She then moved to Tampa, Fla., where she lived until moving to Lawrenceville in 1985. During World War II, Ms. Tharney served as an air-raid warden in Monmouth Junction and also worked at Unexcelled Manufacturing Corp. in Cranbury. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Ms. Tharney and her family were known for delivering daily and Sunday newspapers throughout South Brunswick. Ms. Tharney was a former member of the Altar Rosary Society of St. Cecilia’s R.C. Church in Monmouth Junction.
Her husband, Bartholomew B. Tharney, and son, Alfred B. Tharney, are deceased. She is survived by two sons, Leonard J. Tharney of Lawrenceville and Thaddeus R. Tharney of North Brunswick; three daughters, Joan T. Petruska of Hendersonville, N.C., Rita T. Bare of New Iberia, La., and Marie T. Casey of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.; 19 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at St. Cecilia’s R.C. Church in Monmouth Junction. Interment followed at St. James Cemetery in Jamesburg.
