The South Brunswick High School varsity girls’ basketball team may finally have found its grove.
The Lady Vikings scored back-to-back victories on the road to raise their record to 5-11. South beat Piscataway 67-53 in a Red Division contest last Friday night, then slipped past Sayreville 54-49 in a non-division game on Monday.
Against the Bombers, the Vikings used a big 20-6 second quarter to erase a slight deficit. They took over the lead in that period, and in spite of a Sayreville surge in the third, South never trailed again.
"At halftime we were up by 12," senior co-captain Larissa Rogan said. "And then they put a box and one on Heather (Domotor), so they caught up a little bit."
Domotor, the junior point guard, led the team with a season-high 23 points including three treys. Pam Weiss led off the boards, and she had 12 points on offense. Rogan finished with eight points, and she also hit the boards hard. Meredith Phair dominated Sayreville’s offense with 22 points. Junior center Raven Newcombe had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
"We played really good defense," Rogan said. "We moved the ball around a lot on offense to get a good shot. We didn’t force too many shots. We did very well at the foul line we were 7-for-9. It actually won the game for us at the end. That’s when we put in all our foul shots."
Viking head coach Jaymee Boehmer had said in mid-January that the team just needed to find its rhythm. According to Rogan, that finally seems to be happening.
"We’re clicking together now, and we’re working more as a team," Rogan said. "And we’ve won our last two games which is boosting our confidence. It was just a matter of putting every piece together. We’re scoring a lot now. That was basically our problem we weren’t putting the ball in the hoop. But it’s starting to flow."
The Vikings are now in the second half of their season. They have rematches coming up with Red Division rivals Bishop Ahr (Wednesday, after press time) and at Woodbridge on Friday. The final games of the regular season are both at home. East Brunswick will be in town Tuesday night, and J.P. Stevens visits on Thursday.
