Fund raiser in Monroe being held for postal employee diagnosed with cancer
By: Al Wicklund
MONROE Postal workers will hold a fund-raising event next week to help a fellow employee who has been diagnosed with, and is fighting, cancer.
The event will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 16, at the Jamesburg Elks on West Railroad Avenue in Jamesburg, said Sharon Sorensen, a friend and fellow postal worker.
Ms. Sorensen said she is not disclosing the postal worker’s full name because she would like the woman, whose first name is Erin, to have some measure of privacy.
It will be an afternoon of music and food and a tribute to Erin.
"We’re asking for a $25 per person contribution at the door. All of the proceeds will go to help Erin and her family offset her medical bills," said Ms. Sorensen.
She said everything is being donated to the event, freeing all of the money collected to help Erin.
"There’s no overhead to be met," she said.
She said food is being provided by postal workers, the Jamesburg Elks Hall is being donated and the bands are performing free of charge.
Among the bands scheduled to play are the Basement Musicians Guild, the Yingling Brothers and Ball ‘n’ Chain.
"I know it will be a great event because Erin is such a great person.
"She’s a spiritual person, but she’s also a fighter. She’s a good mother to her two children and is devoted to her husband, who is devoted to her. In all aspects of her life, she’s friendly, helpful and thoughtful," Ms. Sorensen said.
She said Erin has been a rural letter carrier out of the Monroe Post Office for 17 years.
"There are people out there that Erin has served for years who are rooting for her to return to work.
"We’re hoping that her many friends will able to attend the fund-raiser.
"If they aren’t able to attend, we hope they’ll be able to send a gift," Ms. Sorensen said.
