MANALAPAN — The New Jersey Branch of the Yang Chenfu Tai Chi Chuan Center will hold special workshops on Feb. 14, 7 p.m., and Feb. 15, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Excelsior, 355 Route 9 South.
The workshops will feature Master Yang Jun, a sixth generation direct descendant of Yang Luchan, who created the Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan legacy.
"Tai Chi is an internal martial art that is practiced as a series of movements, connected in a flowing pattern, and governed by principals of correct body usage," said Andy Lee, director, Yang Chengfu Tai Chi Chuan Center, East Brunswick. "It is performed slowly in order to gain precision and deep body awareness, and it is suitable for people of all ages and levels of physical ability."
Lee noted that Tai Chi has been developed to provide the benefits of stress reduction, flexibility, stamina and coordination, as well as self-defense. It can be practiced regardless of sex, age or condition of health.
Marlboro resident Sherry Kenduck explained how it has helped her.
"I began taking classes with Andy Lee hoping to help my carpal tunnel syndrome," said Kenduck. "Now, I want to practice Tai Chi so I can age well. In the past seven years, it’s amazing to see how strong my legs and stomach muscles have become."
Kenduck said she suffered with back problems, but now has no problem picking up her granddaughters.
"My body has become much more flexible and my posture has improved," she said.
On Feb. 14 it is expected that Jun will discuss the 10 guiding principles of Tai Chi Chuan. The fee will be $36.
During the session on Feb 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Jun will instruct the 13 postures that link together to create the Tai Chi Chuan form. There will be a one-hour break. The fee will be $72. There is a discount for AARP and International Association members, and also for anyone who brings in this news article. The minimum age to attend is 18.
