Parent training workshops set

By:
Parent Leadership Corps will once again offer two, five-week workshop series for parents of students in grades 9-12.
The workshops will be held both in the morning and evening to reach out to as many parents as possible.
The program is facilitated by parents rather than professionals, and includes such topics as improving communication between parents and children, strengthening family rituals and substance abuse prevention.
The parent facilitators undergo training through the Princeton Center for Leadership Training to prepare for the program.
This spring marks the fifth time the program has been run in Hillsborough; over 125 parents have participated in the program. A number of parents have enjoyed the program so much they have attended the training to become facilitators.
While the commitment to PLC is five weeks, many parents continue to stay in contact with one another even after the workshops have ended. Currently, there is a PLC "graduate" group continuing to meet at the Middle School on the third Wednesday of the month.
As in the fall, the Spring 2003 PLC series will coordinate with the township’s DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program with a presentation by the Hillsborough Police Department. This component offers participants the opportunity to meet the officers who work in the schools, such as DARE officers and the school resource officers.
Parents can learn about the DARE curriculum as well as current and local trends in adolescent substance abuse.
The morning PLC program will be held at the Hillsborough Municipal Building, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Fridays from Feb. 21 through March 21.
The evening PLC program will be held at the Hillsborough Middle School on five consecutive Thursdays, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., starting Feb. 20 and ending March 20.
The cost of the program is $10 and includes materials and a special "Parents: The Anti-Drug" T-shirt. To register, contact Anna Mahler at 874-3420, ext. 6023, or send e-mail to [email protected]
