A 40-year-old New Brunswick man walking along Route 1 near Blackhorse Lane was struck and killed by a car on Friday night.
Police said James Moody was pronounced dead at the scene from massive head injuries suffered when he was struck by a 2001 Honda Accord driven by Matthew Nadia, 22, of Saddle Brook around 11:50 p.m.
Mr. Nadia was transported to St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick, where he was treated for shock and released, said Detective James Ryan of the South Brunswick Police Department.
The accident closed off the southbound lanes of Route 1 between Finnegans Lane to Henderson Road for four hours.
According to police, Mr. Moody was walking with his back toward traffic in the fast lane on the southbound side of Route 1 near the intersection of Route 1 and Blackhorse Lane. It appeared that Mr. Moody was walking from the Oakdale Mobile Home Park to the Brookside Mobile Park, both on Route 1, Detective Ryan said.
The case is under investigation, and no charges have been filed.
Detective Ryan said the victim appeared to be at fault for the accident. He said it won’t be known if alcohol was a factor until the toxicology report comes from the coroner’s office in four to six weeks.
Mr. Moody’s death is the fourth traffic fatality in the township this year; there were only three during all of last year. Detective Ryan said the four fatal traffic accidents are unrelated.
"They do not share any similar characteristics, each had different weather conditions and were on different roadways," he said.
The first fatal car accident occurred Jan. 1. Juan Torres-Peralta of Franklin Park was killed when his 1989 Honda Accord veered across the double-yellow centerline on Finnegans Lane and crashed head on into a 1995 Mazda.
Rita Winick, 80, of Kendall Park died Jan. 16 from injuries suffered when her 1989 Toyota Camry, driven by her husband, William, rear-ended a 2000 Toyota Camry-Solara on Route 1 near Promenade Boulevard.
Anne Tobiassen, 90, of Monroe, died from injuries suffered during a Jan. 29 accident on Dey Road. Police said the Mercury Marquis she was a passenger in crossed the centerline and hit a Chevy van.
