To the editor:
The Cranbury Township Police Department would like to remind residents that by using some simple preventive tips they can help secure their home and family. Burglaries often occur when perpetrators take advantage of opportunities.
Most burglars do not want a confrontation with residents. Therefore, if your home has a "lived-in look," it may be less appealing than the "unoccupied house" down the street.
Windows and doorways should not be obscured, even by shrubbery. Lights activated by motion detectors that are near the roof can help deter a thief who likes to work in darkness. Also, do not leave the garage door up showcasing that a vehicle is gone.
We recommend a professionally installed and monitored alarm system as a deterrent. As members of the New Jersey Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, we can provide pamphlets and advice on shopping for an alarm system and how to prevent false alarms. If you already have an alarm system, use it and register it with us.
Do not hoist up "red flags" that alert others that you are not home. Do not discuss your habits, including work schedule, with strangers. If you get repeated telephone hang-ups or other suspicious calls, dial 1-877-TRACEU (1-877-872-2348).
When engaging a contractor, ask for business identification and references. Be extremely suspicious of unsolicited contractors or canvassers who knock on your door and immediately notify us.
Ensure that newspapers and mail deliveries are either canceled or picked up by a trusted neighbor. Ask that neighbor to keep an eye on your property while keeping your absence a secret. Advise your neighbors to notify the police immediately if they observe suspicious activity near your home and you should also watch out for your neighbors.
Avoid having professional cleaning deliveries made when you are not home or ask a neighbor to take them in until you arrive.
When away for extended periods, consider placing your residence on our vacation list. And, ensure that your lawn is cut or snow removed from your walkway and driveway.
Inventory and photograph you valuables, including your jewelry. Consider placing them in a bank safe deposit box during your absence. Record all product descriptions, including serial numbers of equipment such as computers, cameras, stereos and televisions. Consider engraving your valuables.
Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood when it happens.
Your police department is eager to serve you but needs your eyes and ears. Please do not be reluctant to report suspicious activity immediately. Please contact the department for an appointment if you have any questions.
