Patrolmen Chris Kascik and Kevin Zorn, both eight-year veterans of the Hopewell Township Police Department, were given the township Life Saving Award by Chief Michael Chipowsky during the Feb. 20 Township Committee meeting.
Many other members of the township police force attended the presentation ceremony.
Shortly after 4 p.m. Jan. 4, Officers Kascik and Zorn, who were working nearby on a radar detail, were dispatched to Brandon Road in response to a call about a man lying unconscious in a driveway.
Arriving two minutes after being dispatched, the officers found that the 50-year-old victim had no pulse and was not breathing.
"Zorn and Kascik immediately set up a defibrillator and began to administer CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)," Chief Chipowsky said. "The defibrillator indicated that a shock was necessary. One shock was delivered and the victim’s heart began a normal rhythm."
CPR was continued until a local ambulance and the Mercer County Advanced Life Support Unit arrived. They took over treatment and transported the victim to a local hospital.
"If Patrolman Zorn and Kascik had not responded as quickly as they did to this emergency, and used their training and resources to their full potential, this victim would not have survived," Chief Chipowsky said. "It is my honor to present them with Hopewell Township’s Life Saving Award."
