Several days after the major snowstorm, most of the driveways in Hillsborough have been cleared but many sidewalks remain covered with snow.
This is, of course, no different from the aftermath of many smaller storms over the years.
We moved to Hillsborough from Yardley, Pa., where homeowners are required to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours after the snow ends. The penalty for not doing so is a $100 fine, and it is strictly enforced.
Many of the uncleared sidewalks in Hillsborough are in front of large, expensive homes whose owners are clearly not impoverished and could well afford to hire someone to do the job if they are unable or unwilling to do it themselves.
When people are forced to walk in the street rather than on the sidewalk, it imposes an obvious safety hazard. It is also tough on dogs being walked as the salt stings their paws.
I would like to suggest that our Township Committee consider an ordinance requiring homeowners to clear their sidewalks after a snowstorm. Anyone upon whom this would impose a severe hardship could apply in advance for an exemption.
