The Hillsborough Presbyterian Church invites sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to attend a chaperoned, alcohol free night of dancing, karaoke and lots of fun tomorrow night, Friday.
The dance is slated to start at 8 p.m. and will conclude at 11 p.m., but youngsters wishing to attend should not plan on being fashionably late.
Rev. Nancy Conklin, pastor at the church, emphasized that attendance will be limited to the first 150 kids who arrive. Rev. Conklin said that while the dance was a tremendous success last year, the one down side was the fact that some kids who had wanted to attend were not able to get in.
"Last year we did have to turn some kids away and that was very disheartening," she said. "For safety reasons though, we can’t have more than 150 kids."
The focus of this year’s dance remains the same as it was last year, when church parents conceived the event as a means of offering youth a safe and alcohol free environment in which they can socialize and have fun.
"We were thrilled with how well everything went last year and the feedback we got from parents was so supportive," said Rev. Conklin. "We’re expecting a good crowd this year and I’m sure everything will run just as smoothly this second time around."
"We are very excited about this event," said Wendy Greybek, who along with Becky Obermeier, are the organizers of the event. "The significance of a dance like this is to reach out to the surrounding community and to gather as one community," Wendy said. "It’s a safe place for youth in the community to come dance and have fun."
A disc jockey will again be spinning tunes and a karaoke machine will also be on hand for the less-shy youngsters in the house who might want to grab the microphone and steal the spotlight.
The only significant change that Rev. Conklin and organizers have decided to alter for this year’s dance is the length. "Five hours was a bit too long," said Rev. Conklin of last year’s dance, which ran from 6 to 11 p.m.
The Hillsborough Presbyterian Church is located at 770 Route 206, near Homestead Road. The admission price for the dance is $5 per person and attendance is limited to the first 150. Snacks and beverages will be available for a nominal charge.
