OBITUARIES

AVITA P. TERRY, 72, of Middletown died Feb. 13 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Elizabeth, she lived in Elizabeth prior to moving to Middletown several years ago. Mrs. Terry was retired and held several positions, including receptionist for AA Answering Service and the office of Dr. Anthony Bruno, and catalog sales at Sears Roebuck, all Middletown; as well as teller at Keansburg Middletown National Bank. She was an avid golfer. She was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Cofield. She is survived by her husband, Alfred Terry of Middletown; her son and daughter-in-law, Alfred C. and Deborah A. Terry Jr. of Middletown; her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Bruce Carter of Middletown; her brother, Vincent Shea of Calabash, N.C.; four sisters, Ruth Kennedy of Lakewood, Marice Kneipher of the West Keansburg section of Hazlet, Alicia LaManna of Middletown, and Elenita Palette of Tinton Falls; and three grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown.

LILLIAN M. SAVAGE KOSYK, 83, of Middletown died Feb. 16 at home. She was born in Red Bank, and graduated from Red Bank High School. She was a salesperson and manager at Flora’s Dress Shop, Red Bank, for 26 years. Prior to that, she was a secretary, then manager at Continental Car Dealer, Red Bank. She was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. She was a volunteer at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, and vice president of the Shadow Lake Riverview Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Red Bank Woman’s Club. She was predeceased by her husband, Mike Kosyk in 1988. She is survived by her son, Frank J. CHARLINE J. HEMHAUSER, 73, of Red Bank died Feb. 20 at Avanti, Red Bank. Born in Newark, she resided in Hazlet for 20 years prior to moving to Red Bank two years ago. She was a communicant of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, North Middletown. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America at St. Ann’s Church, Keansburg. She was predeceased by a son, Daniel Hemhauser in 2001; and a granddaughter, Lynn Hardin in 1985. She is survived by her daughter, Bernadette Widmaier of the Belford section of Middletown; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas and Ellen Hemhauser of Tinton Falls, Michael and Lorraine Hemhauser of Middletown, and Joseph Hemhauser of Hazlet; her sister, Lorene Denney of West Orange; and eight grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, North Middletown. Burial was at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo section of Middletown.

VERONICA DUNA ANDERSON, 63, of Red Bank died Feb. 25 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, she resided there prior to moving to Red Bank 43 years ago. Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker. Her hobbies included time with her family, and she was an avid bingo player. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ronald C. Anderson; three daughters, Donamarie Arbothnot of Columbia, S.C., and Rhonda Ann Soviero and Brenda Rose Anderson, both of Red Bank; her sister, Rosemarie Romano of Pleasantville; two granddaughters; and two grandsons. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.

JOYCE B. GRIFFIN, 74, of Fair Haven died Feb. 26 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Newark, she resided in the River Plaza section of Middletown and Little Silver prior to moving to Fair Haven 36 years ago. Mrs. Griffin was a homemaker. Her activities included needlework, knitting, antiquing, time at the beach, and her two cats. She is survived by her husband, James A. Griffin; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Christian E. Griffin of Fair Haven, and Doug and Pam Griffin of Howell; her brother, Doug Burkhardt of Arnold, Md.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. MARY FLORENCE CEJKA SYTSMA, 59, of Little Silver died Feb. 27 at home after a battle with cancer. Born in New Brunswick, she resided in Delaware and Michigan until 1980, when she lived in Red Bank and Rumson before moving to Little Silver. Mrs. Sytsma was a retired high school English teacher at the Children’s Center of Monmouth County, Neptune. She was also a teacher of handicapped children. She was an active member and ordained deacon at the First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Florence Voorhees and Joseph B. Cejka. Mrs. Sytsma is survived by her husband, James Sytsma; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jennifer Lesniak, and Kristen and Michael Battle; her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and David Littleton; several nieces and nephews; and one grandniece. A funeral service was held at First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
