Greater Media Newspapers has won a total of 33 editorial, photography and advertising awards in the weekly division of the New Jersey Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest for 2002.

The tally included a record 19 awards in photography, including six first-place awards and a near sweep of two sports photography categories, Sports Feature and Sports Feature Picture Story.

The newspaper group also swept the Coverage of Government category, bringing home first, second and third places. Gloria Stravelli of The Hub won first place; Charles W. Kim, of the North/South Brunswick Sentinel, second place; and Carolyn O’Connell, of the Atlanticville, third.

Besides the outstanding showing in these categories, Executive Editor Greg Bean said he is especially pleased with the group’s showing in the Editorial Comment category, where Brian Donahue, managing editor of the Suburban, won second place for his piece titled "Lack of Research for [Sayreville] Borough Administrator’s Post."

Mark Rosman, managing editor of the News Transcript, received third place for his commentary about Marlboro titled "Whatever Tony Wants, Tony Gets."

"Although we’re extremely proud of our editorial awards, and our great showing in the coverage of municipal government and editorial-writing categories, this was certainly photography’s year," Bean said. "With 19 total awards, all of our staff photographers were honored by their peers. Still, it looks like Veronica Yankowski, with 10 awards, is going to need an extra large box to carry hers home.

"I’d also like to call attention to the company’s advertising awards," Bean said. "Our classified advertising department has been consistently honored by the NJPA in the last few years, but this year, the retail advertising department will also bring home awards for special sections and color ad campaign.

"I think the whole company should be proud of our showing," he said.
