Power plant will be smart
use of abandoned property
I am pleased that Sayreville officials have found a way to maximize the use of 7 acres of dilapidated and abandoned property adjacent to the Reliant Power plant property off River Road.
This land has not generated taxes for Sayreville for at least a decade and has been an example of wasted opportunity.
Borough officials have been able to secure a clean, industrial use for the property. An enterprise, known as the Neptune Electrical Transmission System, has agreed to purchase the land for $2.25 million and then pay the borough $400,000 a year over the next 30 years, followed with tax payments in perpetuity.
The facility being planned will cleanly convert AC power to DC power with no noise, smell or traffic. The closest home is more than three football fields away; no one will be negatively affected by this project.
This project will also create local construction jobs, helping local workers through these uncertain economic times.
I urge Sayreville officials to continue seeking out smart development of blighted property, providing revenue to the town that can support quality of life concerns, such as open space, tax relief, police and road upgrades.
