With the cold winter months for the most part just a memory, auto racing competitors and enthusiasts will be shaking off cabin fever this Saturday evening at 5 p.m. as Wall Township Speedway opens its 54th consecutive season of stock car racing. An anticipated large field of cars is creating plenty of excitement, as is the recent announcement that the famed third-mile paved oval has become a member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series for the 2003 season.
The season opener of the 2003 championship campaign will see the WTS Modifieds compete in a 30-lap main event, while the Pro Stocks and Street Stocks both battle in 25-lap main events. Truck Series, Legend Cars and TQ Midget racers will each kick off the new season in 20-lap feature races. A full slate of qualifying events is on the agenda.
Once the season opener is in the record books, pro auto racing will continue at Wall Township Speedway every Saturday night through October. Special Sunday events featuring the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour, the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified Tour, championship Demolition Derbies and Monster Truck action are also on the 2003 schedule.
Wall looking for karters
The management of Wall Township Speedway recently made quite an investment when they put a smooth final asphalt surface on the wide safety apron on the infield of the third-mile paved oval. Although the idea behind the project was to provide a flat inner oval for Bandolero car racing, onlookers immediately brought up the prospects of Go-Kart competition.
Benitez said that telephone calls from all interested Go-Kart racers are welcome. The speedway office is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and all day on racing dates. The track’s telephone number is (732) 681-6400.
