Borough passes snow removal law

Hightstown’s council also introduced an ordinance regulating yard design in a coming senior community.

HIGHTSTOWN — The Borough Council recently amended two ordinances relating to property owners.
Ordinance 2003-05 added a clause to the property maintenance code compelling owners of property adjacent to a borough street to remove snow and ice, or, when the ice proves too difficult to remove, cover those areas with "abrasive material" to provide a safe walkway.
Council members said this ordinance was amended because some residents failed to clear their walkways during this past winter’s heavy snowfalls. The amendment passed March 17.
Ordinance 2003-07 would add a clause to the zoning laws stating that homeowners who will reside in the borough’s coming senior community on Wyckoff’s Mill Road may construct or add "yard design elements" only at the edges of the property line. These elements (such as garden areas or decorative items) may extend only 3 feet from that property line, toward the interior of that property.
In other words, these design elements would not be permitted in the middle of a yard. The measure was introduced March 17 and will be up for a public hearing on April 21.
