Dr. Donald Robert Goodenough

   Dr. Donald Robert Goodenough, 75, of West Trenton died Wednesday at home after a brief illness.
   Born in San Francisco, Dr. Goodenough was a retired research psychologist, internationally recognized in his field for contributions he made in the areas of sleep research and cognition.
   After having served in the US Army at Los Alamos, he graduated from Stanford University in 1952. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Oregon, did post-graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh, and earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Rochester, N.Y., in 1955.
   He was employed for 17 years as professor of psychiatry with the State University of New York’s Downstate Medical Center. In 1971 he became a senior research psychologist with Educational Testing Service, Princeton, and retired in 1982, when he accepted a temporary position in Italy as visiting professor at the University of Rome.
   Author of more than 100 articles in his fields of interest, Dr. Goodenough was one of the earliest psychologists to lay the foundations of modern sleep research in the 1950s and early 1960s.
   Dr. Goodenough enjoyed fishing, playing tennis and golf, and was a family genealogist.
   Predeceased by his parents, Edna Amelia and Darwin Ernest Goodenough, a brother Darwin Ernest Jr., and an infant son David, he is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Payne at home; sons Charles Darwin Goodenough of Los Angeles, Calif., and James Norman Goodenough of Bensalem, Pa.; a daughter Christine Anne Roberts of Washington Crossing, Pa.; grandchildren Alexandra Maria Goodenough, August Bruno Donato Goodenough, Nadia Ghani, Caitlin Payne Roberts and Kyle Donald Roberts.
   The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Blackwell Memorial Home, 21 N. Main St., Pennington. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Funeral services will be private.
   Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Dr. Goodenough’s name to the Cardiac Unit of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 34th St. and Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia, Pa., 19104.
