Blawenburg Band to present Saturday concert

MONTGOMERY — The Blawenburg Band will bring its brand of patriotic American music to its hometown Saturday night with a concert at Montgomery High School auditorium.
The 90-minute concert, which will begin at 8 p.m., marks the 113th anniversary of one of the oldest bands in New Jersey. The 60-member group plays a wide array of instruments, including reeds, string bass and other traditional instruments.
Dave Hacker, a trombonist with the band, said band member Tom Boyd will have a featured spot during the show for his solo clarinet work. Dr. Jerry Rife, fine arts professor at Rider University, will conduct.
Following the show will be an improvised Dixieland session with about 10 band members. Refreshments will be served in the school cafeteria.
The band plays over 30 concerts a year and has been a staple of the Hopewell Parade since 1924. Mr. Hacker said four summer concerts are scheduled for Hopewell this year, along with performances at the Princeton Shopping Center. A show in Yardley, Pa., is on the band’s calendar for July 4.
There is no admission fee for the concert. Mr. Hacker advised people to arrive early for the show, as the 700 seats fill up quickly.
