Anne Palfy recognized for her service to Democratic groups
Anne Rose Palfy of North Tenth Avenue in Manville has been named a 2003 recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Award sponsored by the Somerset County Federation of Democratic Women.
Ms. Palfy is one of 13 women who were nominated by their municipal chairpersons, Gov. James E. McGreevey and Sen. Jon Corzine for providing extraordinary service to the community and Democratic organization.
The Eleanor Roosevelt Awards Dinner takes place at 7 p.m. May 8 at Russo Continental, 266 West Union Ave., Bound Brook.
Ms. Palfy is a lifelong resident of Manville and has been a member of the Manville Democratic Club for more than 35 years. She first became active in politics when she encouraged her husband, Albert, to "get a hobby."
This hobby turned into a lifetime of community involvement and commitment for both of them. While Mr. Palfy served on the Borough Council and as mayor, Ms. Palfy spent several years as Manville Democratic Club Secretary. She has been the Manville District 2 committeewoman for at least the past 30 years.
Ms. Palfy has worked on numerous campaigns doing whatever was necessary to get the job done, whether it was being involved in a late-night strategy session, making phone calls or folding campaign literature. She organized and worked on many fund-raisers through the years, from small bake sales to larger dinners and pancake breakfasts.
In the 1980s, Ms. Palfy became more involved with the Somerset County Democratic Party. Although working in a tougher forum, she continued her dedication to the Democratic Party by serving as recording secretary and taking part in various county fund-raisers and events. She helped reactivate the Somerset County Federation of Democratic Women and serves as vice president for membership in that organization.
Ms. Palfy’s service to her community extends beyond politics. While her children were younger, she served as Cub Scout den mother. She was on Manville’s Golden Jubilee Committee in 1979 and has recently been asked to join the committee for Manville’s Diamond Jubilee to be celebrated in 2004.
She is a member of the Manville First Aid and Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary, where she shares her talents for coordination and fund raising on several of their events. She also is a member of the Manville Senior Citizen Club.
Ms. Palfy is the mother of four grown children and is the proud "Nonna" to two grandchildren.
