On Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., the terraces at Morven will be filled with an assortment of heirloom plants sure to fill the needs of the most discriminating gardener. These flowering plants, many of which are not to be found in the commercial outlets, can be the perfect accent for the historical home or garden.
Each seed-grown plant at the Morven sale has been sown in small quantities especially for this event. Expect to find flowering annuals graced with the enticing scents missing from most modern bedding plants.
For the adventurous gardener, there will be 10-foot-tall castor bean plants, and for the patio planter, cascading coleus and old-fashioned petunias. Also featured are lush flowering vines, over two dozen varieties of time-tested roses, six types of peonies and nine of clematis.
Visitors are invited to stroll Morven’s historic grounds on the date of the sale. The visitor center will be open. Vendors will have garden pots and accessories for sale, and artist Sheila Watson Coutin will be on hand with her whimsical clay creations.
The heirloom garden theme is a natural for Morven, once the gracious home of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and of five New Jersey governors. Now undergoing restoration, the interior of the house is not currently open to the public.
Morven is administered by Historic Morven, Inc. in cooperation with the State of New Jersey. The grounds and visitor center will be open for the season starting Saturday on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
