‘The Spirit of Jane Rodney’

Komen ‘Race for the Cure’ to honor governor.

   The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation New Jersey Race for the Cure announces that The First Annual Spirit of Jane Rodney Award will be presented to Governor James McGreevey for his long-standing commitment to the battle against breast cancer in New Jersey.
   This event will be held at Drumthwacket on Monday, May 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The reception will include cocktails, appetizers, light entrees, and will feature entertainment and a silent auction. The cost is $100 per person. Advanced reservations are required. No tickets will be sold at the door.
   The Spirit of Jane Rodney Annual Award was created in memory of the late, beloved director of the Breast Cancer Resource Center of the YWCA Princeton, also chair of New Jersey Race for the Cure from its inception, who lost her courageous battle with breast cancer in January 2002.
   Governor McGreevey has shown unwavering support for the New Jersey Race for the Cure since its inception in 1994. As mayor of Woodbridge and as governor, he has pledged his commitment to the fight against breast cancer.
   The Komen Race for the Cure is the largest series of 5K fitness runs/walks in the world. The New Jersey foot race attracts the most participants of any in the state and is the largest single gathering to benefit women with breast cancer.
   Over the past nine years the Komen New Jersey Race for the Cure has raised more than $5 million for breast cancer research and diverse services for the medically underserved.
   This year’s race will be held on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Route 206 in Lawrence.
   The mission of the Komen Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. Since its inception in 1982, over $400 million in funds have been raised.
   The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s National Research Program funds innovative breast cancer research.
   A minimum of 25 percent of all net proceeds help to fund the research program. A maximum of 75 percent of net proceeds helps to fund breast cancer diagnostics, treatment, awareness and educational projects within the state for the medically underserved.
