The Princeton Public Library celebrated the conclusion of the steel work for its new facility Friday afternoon with a "topping off" party.
Library staff, trustees, members of the Friends of the Princeton Public Library and donors to the capital campaign gathered at the construction site to sign the last steel beam of the 3-story building, said Library Director Leslie Burger.
The ironworkers placed the special beam into place and marked the beam with an American flag, Ms. Burger said.
Later this week, when the top portion of the steel work is concluded, the library’s building contractor, Turner Construction Co., will follow a builder’s tradition by placing an evergreen tree atop the building, she said.
Now that the skeleton of the building is completed, the skin, or masonry work will start after the concrete floors are poured, Ms. Burger said.
After receiving T-shirts with the logo "I Helped Build the New Princeton Public Library," the group, including the construction workers, adjourned to the garden next to Witherspoon Bread Company for lunch, she said.
