Board must protect students’ safety

To the editor

Surprise, surprise, surprise. The April 25th incident where two first-graders "escaped" from Sunnymead Elementary school did not come as a big shock to our family.
Last year, our then sixth-grade son walked away from the middle school on several occasions after altercations with other students while the students were in the hallway changing classes.
Instead of taking responsibility, the faculty and staff gave detention to our son for being assaulted by several older students.
This has been a great concern to many Hillsborough families enough to remove their children from the Hillsborough School District and put them into private schools.
At what point does the school district stop pointing blame on our children and take the responsibility at hand? We have put our trust as parents for the schools to keep our children safe.
How many more kids have to "escape" before the bullying will be stopped? No excuse is acceptable.
Instead of worrying about an "Astroturf" field or other "luxuries," the Board of Education should worry about the safety of our children.
