I had just gotten home from work. I jumped out of my car with a folder with some papers from work. Instead of going into the house I decided to go and get the mail first. I put down the folder on the back of my car and went to get the mail.
About two hours went by and I decided to run an errand. I got into my car, and made a couple of turns to get out of my development. The last turn was onto Amwell Road.
After pulling onto Amwell I happened to glance into my rear view mirror and saw papers flying about on the road. I didn’t think much about it. I kept driving and got to the light at 206 when there was a knock on the passenger side window.
I rolled down the window wondering what could be wrong with the woman knocking on the window; she had a concerned look on her face.
"I think I saw papers fly off the back of your car," she said. I didn’t reply as I was trying to think if those could have been papers from my car. I had forgotten about the folder on the back of my car.
She reiterated her comment, and I said, "OK, thanks" … then it hit me they were my papers. I turned around and hurried back down the road.
It was getting dark now and I could see that there were about 20 papers scattered over the middle and side of the road at an intersection. I pulled onto a side road and parked my car.
When the light turned red I ran out into the road and grabbed a few papers and then ran back to the side of the road. Even though I felt silly, I did this a few times.
These papers were resumes of individuals I had just been interviewing for the last couple of hours.
Then I saw a township vehicle drive by. The gentleman and he was a true gentleman turned his truck around, put on his flashing lights so nobody would pass him and made it safe for me to go grab some more papers. He also got out of his car and helped me with those papers that were in the middle of the road. I thanked him for his help and he drove away.
When I returned home with all of the papers I felt so good about this town that I live in. Not only did one person help me, but two.
Two kind souls went out of their way to help a stranger. It may seem like its not that big a deal … so two people took one minute of their time to help. But it was very important to me.
Of the group of people I interviewed, one of them is now working due to the interview that I had with him and the fact that I didn’t lose his resume that day.
So, not only did they help me, they helped someone in a roundabout way find a job … and in economic times like these, a job is invaluable.
My reason for telling this story is you never know what a small act of kindness you do may mean to someone else. So help someone when you can … it may be small to you, but important and memorable to him or her. And I also wanted to write this story to thank the two kind individuals that helped me that day.
Thank you so much for your kindness it has not been forgotten.
