Toll Gate was the Hopewell Valley school with the highest percentage of students participating in the April 15 Project Democracy election.
On Friday (May 2), U.S. Congressman Rush Holt (NJ-12th) presented an American flag from the nation’s capitol to Toll Gate Grammar School in recognition of the students’ participation in Project Democracy.
Toll Gate was the Hopewell Valley school with the highest percentage of students participating in the April 15 election which featured not only voting by adults for school board candidates and on school budget questions, but students from each school voting on special questions pertaining to their individual buildings.
At Toll Gate, 58 percent of the student body voted on election day.
"Voting is a special privilege, sometimes taken for granted," said Congressman Holt as he presented the flag to Spencer Caton, Student Council president.
"We will fly this flag and it will remind us how important voting is, and that every vote counts," replied Spencer. The student body sang "The Star Spangled Banner" as the flag was raised.
After the presentation, Congressman Holt, a Hopewell Township resident, also read the book, "We, The Kids," to the students. This assisted the students in achieving their goal of reading a million minutes and, in fact, placed them over that mark.
