The board of Princeton Community Housing hosted a reception Sunday for William Scheide at Elm Court in Princeton.
Mr. Scheide has given a $50,000 gift to launch the fund-raising campaign for the building of 68 additional one-bedroom apartments for senior citizens at Elm Court on Elm Road.
Attending the reception were Congressman Rush Holt (D-12), Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Princeton Borough), Princeton Township Mayor Phyllis Marchand, Mercer County Freeholder Brian M. Hughes, State Senator Shirley Turner (D-Lawrence), Borough Councilman Joseph O’Neill and Township Committeeman Bernard Miller.
Presentations were made by Beth Ogilvie-Freda, president of the PCH board, Harriet Bryan and John Gilmore of the PCH board and Marie Wallace, president of the Elm Court Residents’ Council.
The event marked the kickoff of the fund-raising campaign for Elm Court II. The present Elm Court consists of 88 one-bedroom and studio apartments for seniors and disabled Princeton residents. The new apartments will bring the total number at the Elm Road site to 156.
A Princeton resident and Princeton University alumnus, Mr. Scheide is a passionate bibliophile and musicologist and has built a world-renowned book collection that includes a rare assemblage of the first four printed Bibles, including a copy of the Gutenberg Bible. His collection is housed at the Scheide Library at the university.
Princeton Community Housing also owns and operates affordable housing at Griggs Farm, consisting of 68 apartments and two townhouses, and Princeton Community Village, with 167 townhouses and 71 one-bedroom apartments in the mid-rise Holly House.
