MONTGOMERY A new township ordinance will ban trucks with a gross weight of over 4 tons from Blue Spring Road.
Township Administrator Donato Nieman said the ordinance came about after residents in the vicinity of Blue Spring Road voiced concern over the road becoming a bypass to Route 206.
"(Trucks) would cut through there to avoid 206," he said. With a recently completed central section, Blue Spring Road now links Princeton Avenue with River Road.
Mr. Nieman said much of the traffic has been generated by heavy trucks coming back and forth from the Stony Brook Regional Sewerage Authority treatment plant on River Road in Princeton Township. He also said "orphan trucks" trucks that use the road simply as a residential shortcut have bothered residents.
Attempts to impose the weight limit have taken over a year, Mr. Nieman said, noting the state Department of Transportation needed to reassign new employees to the Blue Spring Road investigation after the previous team of workers was laid off.
The ordinance does, however, provide some exceptions and still allows local delivery trucks to use Blue Spring Road.
"If someone’s moving in, you’re allowed to have a moving van," said Mr. Nieman.
