The Lawrence High School softball team snapped its four-game losing streak in impressive fashion Tuesday, hammering Colonial Valley Conference Colonial Division foe Trenton 17-1 in five innings.
The Cardinals (9-8) rebounded from a tough 7-4 loss Monday at Ewing. Lawrence led that game 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Blue Devils plated four runs to pull ahead.
"We had a frustrating game against Ewing," Lawrence coach Pete Cino said. "We left 17 runners on base, and we gave up four unearned runs. They (the Cardinals) were angry after Monday. They really wanted to pound the ball today (Tuesday against Trenton)."
The Cardinals pounded the ball early and often against the Tornadoes, racking up 11 hits and scoring at least once in each of the five innings. Junior outfielder Emily Panasowich led the assault with four hits and three RBIs, while junior second baseman Liz Casale added three hits and three RBIs.
Casale also had three hits — including a double — against Ewing.
"Liz Casale is really getting hot," Cino said. "Her bat is really coming alive."
Panasowich, meanwhile, seems to be regaining the swing she had prior to missing time during spring break.
"Her (Panasowich’s) swing is definitely coming back," Cino said.
Senior left-hander Jess Goodstein improved the 3-1 against Trenton, allowing one run on two hits over five innings. Junior catcher Erin Gomez knocked in two runs, and senior first baseman Michele Van Arsdale picked up an RBI. Senior third baseman Tiffany Robert had a double against Ewing.
"Robert’s hitting the ball hard," Cino said. "So is Michele Van Arsdale."
