Scouts learn the lesson of journalism

This evening (Friday), the Cranbury Historical Society will present "Over Here, Molly Pitcher: Stories of a Woman of the Army of the American Revolution."
The program, which features historic interpreter Stacy Roth, takes places at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Admission is free. This event is part of the Historical Society’s yearlong celebration of the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth.
Janet Crowe, one of the organizers of the PTO’s Parent Prom, announced that the event is nearly sold out. The prom can accommodate just 10 more couples, so if you have been thinking about attending, now is your last chance to reserve a place.
The fund-raiser will take place at the Hightstown Firehouse on May 31, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The PTO is pulling out all the stops to make this prom as memorable as your first. Festivities will include corsages for sale at the door, nominally priced prom photos by Jim Gerberich, a DJ, silent auction and door prizes.
Tickets are $50 per person and may be reserved by phoning Janet Crowe at (609) 409-0595. If you are signed up but not yet paid, the PTO requests payment as soon as possible.
The township is in need of poll workers for upcoming elections. The positions pay $200 per day. Workers must be able to work from 5:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. and attend a mandatory training session once every two years.
If you are interested in becoming a poll worker, please phone Kathy Cunningham at Town Hall at (609) 395-0900, ext. 231.
Budding journalist Samantha Pinto, a fourth-grader at Cranbury School and a Junior Girl Scout, submitted this report on a recent Scout meeting:
On Tuesday, May 13 Girl Scout Troop 1467 received a special treat at the meeting. Lisa Sandberg, a professional journalist who writes for magazines and newspapers around the world, came to talk to us about her awesome job. "My job is sooo exciting!" announced the Princeton Junction woman. "I travel the world and get to do what I love."
Ms. Sandberg’s career doesn’t cut into her time with her family, either. She can work at home or bring them along on her trips if she pleases. One thought crept into each Girl Scout’s mind: Can kids write for newspapers and magazines, too?
"There are certain newspapers and magazines kids can write for," Ms. Sandberg said. "Sometimes you get paid for it, too."
After Ms. Sandberg finished her interesting speech, our troop split up into patrols and started some writing of our own. We made up funny stories, poems, articles and mini-journals. Plus, we got an exclusive interview with Lisa Sandberg. Well, I know one thing for sure Tuesday’s meeting was superb!
And I know one thing for sure Samantha has a future in journalism!
Several local families are looking to hire a high-school age baby sitter to look after two or three third-grade boys for a few hours on most weekday afternoons beginning at 3 p.m., from June 23 through Aug.15.
The sitter would take the boys after summer rec. camp. Anyone interested in the position may phone Loida at (609) 860-2820.
The Art in the Park program resumes this Sunday, May 18, from noon to 4 p.m. The Arts Council has added a twist this year. The plein aire sessions will be held in "park-like settings." Each month will feature a different garden as well as a different guest artist.
Sunday’s guest artist will be Nadine Berkowsky, who will be setting up her easel in the charming gardens of Lee and David Nissen, 7 Symmes Court. Participants may meet in Memorial Park, next to the firehouse, or go directly to the featured garden.
Also, every artist who participates in any of this year’s Art in the Park events and creates a work based on a featured garden will be invited to enter a juried exhibition to be shown in the Gourgaud Gallery in October 2003.
Mark your calendar for an entertaining evening of vocal music from the Men of Harmony. The group will perform on Saturday, June 14 at 7:30p.m. at the United Methodist Church.
Again sponsored by the Lioness Club, the Men of Harmony appeared in Cranbury last June and have been invited back due to the overwhelming response of their audience. This year’s program will feature selections of patriotic music in honor of Flag Day, as well as show tunes and a few religious melodies.
Tickets are $7 and may be obtained from any Lioness Club member and at the door. Light refreshments are included in the ticket price. All money raised by this concert is earmarked for charity.
Residents can contact Ms. Sedor by phone at (609) 655-3386, by fax at (609) 655-1613, by e-mail at [email protected] or by mail at 32 Evans Drive, Cranbury, N.J. 08512.
