HILLSBOROUGH Alphonse Michael "Al" DeMarco died Saturday, May 17, at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. He was 78.
Born and raised in Plainfield, he moved to Hillsborough 18 years ago.
Mr. DeMarco was an automobile technician all his life, working in the many dealerships of his late stepbrother Dominick Toresco and a nephew Donald Toresco. He retired from Crystal Auto Mall as parts manager five years ago.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Wars having received many distinguished medals of honor.
In his younger years he also was a semi-professional boxer in the Plainfield area and in the United States Navy.
He was a lifetime member of The Disabled American Veterans, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 506; former past commander of the American Legion, Post 265 in North Plainfield, and former member of The Italian American Club in North Plainfield.
He was predeceased, by his sister, Genevieve (Dolly) Zimmermann; his stepsisters, Lillian Darrow and Jeanette DiQuollo; and stepbrothers Matthew (Mike) Toresco, Anthony (Red) Toresco.
Surviving are his wife, Geneva (Ginny) Stewart DeMarco, his daughters,JoAnne Waller Mills of Point Pleasant and Barbara Mazzagatti of Hillsborough, with whom he lived; six grandchildren; a sister, Ernestine Campanelli of South Plainfield and Nancy "Vinnie" Schmidt of North Carolina; a stepsister, Betty Toresco Simmons; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are being held today at 10 a.m. from Hillsborough Funeral Home, Hillsborough, followed by burial in the Neshanic Cemetery, Hillsborough.
