Flashes beat Warriors 13-3

The New Egypt team the Florence Township Memorial High School boys’ varsity baseball team played on Monday was no push-over. However, with the Freedom Division Championship at stake, the Flashes pulverized the Warriors, 13-3, in five innings.
When it’s at it’s best, Florence has a "take no prisoners team attitude," which makes it virtually unstoppable. On Monday, New Egypt got just a little taste of just how good the Flashes can be and often are. While Jay Karmazin (the winner with four innings of solid work) and Tommy Giambrone (an inning) were both good on the mound, the Florence hitters stole the show. Florence smacked 16 hits including two doubles by Bryan Maus, who also walked and drove in four runs. Giambrone also cracked a pair of two-baggers and knocked in a run. Furthermore, Jared Burg (2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI), Bobby Cardone (2-for-4, RBI) and Karmazin (3-for-3 with an RBI) all crushed Warriors’ pitching with authority.
Furthermore, the Ordogs, Steve and Matt, each drove in a pair or runs and Joe Spahn had an RBI.
In many ways, Shawnee’s 5-3 win over Florence in Saturday’s second round of the Diamond Classic was a huge moral victory for Florence.
After falling behind early 2-0 on a Ben Yerkes’ home run, Florence came back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the third and then it went ahead 3-2 when Matt Ordog tripled in Spahn in the fourth.
Unfortunately, Shawnee, a strong Group IV team, battled back with single runs in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to capture the contest.
Nonetheless, Giambrone and Karmazin each pitched outstanding for Florence.
Last Thursday, Florence socked Palmyra, 14-4, at Palmyra.
With a grand salami, Maus provided much of the fireworks for the victorious Flashes, although Burg (two doubles) and Cardone (a two-bagger) supplied key extra base hits too. Tommy "G" got the win.
"It was a pretty good game for Joe Spahn," added Florence Coach John Gray.
Matt Ordog tossed a gem in the Flashes 10-0 win over Burlington City on Wednesday (May 14th). Burg and Karmazin each banged out a pair of two-
base hits in support of their starting pitcher.
Florence (16-5) has really come together as a team this season. The second-seeded Flashes are scheduled to host the winner of the Gloucester City/ Maple Shade game in a NJSIAA Group I South match-up on Friday. Florence was scheduled to have hosted Bordentown this past Tuesday.
