Man charged with numerous
offenses after traffic stop
SPOTSWOOD — A Monroe man arrested by police on drug possession charges on Sunday is accused of biting a police officer’s finger.
According to police, Patrolman Nicholas Mayo stopped a vehicle driven by Michael L. Fazio, 31, at 9:24 p.m. on Main Street for failure to maintain a lane. Mayo reportedly smelled lit marijuana coming from the vehicle and after a further investigation determined that the suspect was driving under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.
Fazio was arrested, and a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a pack of cigarette rolling papers and a "dried greenish-brown vegetation" that was concealed in toilet paper, according to police.
Fazio allegedly tried to destroy evidence by grabbing it from Mayo’s hand with his mouth. Police said that, in the process, he bit Mayo’s index finger.
Fazio was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, driving under the influence, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession in a motor vehicle, tampering/destroying evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, in addition to motor vehicle offenses including driving an uninsured motor vehicle.
He was lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, in lieu of $10,000 bail, with no 10 percent option.
