OLD BRIDGE — High school students from both in and outside Old Bridge are invited to sign up for remedial classes in English, social studies, math, science and health through the district’s summer school program, beginning in July.
The five-week program will run from July 7 to Aug. 7 at the Old Bridge High School West Campus, Route 516, according to information released by the district last week.
Two sessions running 2 1/2 hours each will be offered for each class. The first session will run from 8-10:30 a.m., and the second session will run from 10:40 a.m. to 1:10 p.m.
Students must provide their own transportation to classes.
Only remedial classes will be offered during the summer session. Students who have failed a subject will be allowed to repeat that class and receive credit for it upon successful completion of the summer classes, district materials indicate.
No advanced credit or enrichment courses will be offered during the summer session.
Course selections consist of English I, English II, English III, and English IV; World History, U.S. History I, and U.S. History II; Integrated Math I, Integrated Math II, Integrated Math III, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Senior Math; Biology and Integrated Science, and Health 9, 10, 11, and 12.
Old Bridge residents can attend classes tuition-free. and can register through their guidance counselors.
Out-of-district students will be required to pay tuition of $300 per course and $100 for health courses. Those students should bring their signed registration form and check or money order to the Old Bridge High School West campus guidance office by 2:30 p.m. on June 27.
In addition, students from outside the district must have their registration forms signed by a guidance counselor or principal from their home district high school.
The Old Bridge summer school program is one of only a handful of programs available in Central New Jersey, district officials say.
In previous years, students from both in and outside Old Bridge have enrolled in summer classes, according to Lori Luicci, the district’s public relations coordinator.
"We get [students] from all over," Luicci said.
Neighboring Sayreville, Matawan and Aberdeen Township send a substantial number of students to the district’s classes, Luicci said.
By taking summer classes, students also can ease their course loads in the coming school year, Luicci said.
For example, a 10th grade student who has failed English I the previous year can repeat that class during the summer. If the student then passes English I, he or she can take English II in September.
As a result, the student does not have to take both English courses concurrently in the same year, Luicci noted.
The summer courses also open up spaces in classes required for graduation, Luicci said. A 10th-grader who might have been included on the roster for Health 9 in September can move on to Health 10 with successful completion of the freshman-level class in summer school.
