The Historic Village of Old Bridge Community Group Inc. will host a reception and guided walking tours of the historic village from 1-4 p.m. on June 21. Guides will start the tours at the East Brunswick Museum, 16 Maple St. Groups may return to the museum for refreshments following the tour.
All participants will receive a copy of the organization’s booklet Down Through the Village, a walking tour descriptive brochure. The community group received grant funds in 2002 to print and distribute the brochure for use by the general public and local schools.
Funding has been provided in part by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission/Board of Chosen Freeholders and the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of cultural affairs in the Department of State.
The brochure includes information on homes and locations that were important during the period of village development, and it promotes stewardship of the community. Visitors may trace vital links to the historic roots of the village of Old Bridge. The project is an outdoor, self-guided walking tour on publicly owned property, with no barriers for the handicapped.
Located at the intersection of Old Bridge Turnpike and Main Street in East Brunswick, and bordered by Route 18, Old Bridge Turnpike, the South River, River Road and Chestnut Hill Cemetery, the area includes approximately 175 homes, some dating back to the early 1700s.
