Sea Bright has a new zoning official. She is Mary Tangolics, of Ocean Grove, who is an architect and certified planner. The Borough Council approved the hiring of Tangolics at its June 17 meeting. She started work the next day and replaces Ray DiPasquale, who left to take a job in Montana. Tangolics will also serve as the assistant code enforcement official.

Sea Bright Councilman Andrew Mencinsky said the summer recreation program being developed for adults and children under the borough’s new recreation director will include karate, squash, and beach volleyball, most offered on a fee basis. He noted how the borough has a beautiful (privately owned) squash club in its midst, which was totally renovated last year.

Mencinsky also reminded everyone about the borough’s upcoming Beach Bash on Saturday, which is being held as a fund-raiser for the recreation program. The party will take place from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. on the municipal beach and will feature music by local bands, family activities such as volleyball, tug of war, and sack races, and hamburgers and hot dogs served from the grill. Tickets are $15 per person; $5 for children under age 12.

Liberty Extravaganza, the always eagerly awaited Fourth of July concert presented every year by the First Presbyterian Church of Red Bank, will be held on July 6. It will be kicked off with a strawberry festival on the patio from 5 to 7 p.m., which will be followed by the concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Featured will be annual favorites such as "We Need A Parade," "God Bless America," and the "Salute to the Armed Forces" with the songs of each of the military services. The church’s Tower Hill Choir will be joined by singers from the community and other local churches, and a local brass ensemble, as well as Tower Hill’s high school bell ringers, in putting on the show which will conclude with the raising of the grand flag during the "Star Spangled Banner" finale. The 49th annual sidewalk sale will be held in downtown Red Bank July 25, 26 and 27. Red Bank RiverCenter, which sponsors the sale, promises this sidewalk sale will be the biggest ever, stretching over three days from Friday through Sunday. Friday and Saturday hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Family & Children Service will host its 53rd summer party July 16 at 3 p.m. An afternoon tea will take place under a tent at the Navesink Country Club. A highlight of the event will be silent and gift auctions. Each auction will consist of in-vogue, new and vintage original handbags donated by design houses including Ferragamo, Kate Spade, Prada and others. Proceeds of the event will benefit the FCS, which is the oldest and largest social services agency in Monmouth County. Tickets are $50, and $35 for those 13-18 years of age. On Saturday, July 26, from 2-5 p.m., Cel-ebration! Animation Art Gallery will host a gallery exclusive with special guest Kent Melton. Direct from California, Mr. Melton is an artist and sculptor for Disney, Warner Bros., Dream Works and other major film studios. He will be featuring his newest releases from the classic collections, Snow White and Pinocchio.

Red Bank Regional High School’s senior class presented The Community YMCA Count Basie Achievement Branch with a $1,000 gift certificate to Borders Books to benefit the children in the after-school programs.

The Oceanport First Aid Department will be sending out letters to all borough residents next week asking for donations for the squad. Booklets for the 50/50 cash raffles are now available from Capt. Linda Johnson at (732) 222-8856, Jane Ciani (732) 542-7419, and Laura Hornung (732) 460-1901. The proceeds of the raffle will go toward the improvement of the squad building. The drawing will be held at the annual bazaar scheduled for Dec. 13.

Thanks to the Oceanport Garden Seniors, the squad was given the $827.50 proceeds of a flea market held by the seniors in May.

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary Oceanport Hook and Ladder Company have created a cookbook with recipes from borough residents and helpful cooking hints. The book is available for sale at the borough clerk’s office for $10.

Oceanport Borough residents can expect to see a street sweeper in their neighborhoods. The street-sweeping process will begin this month and is expected to return to the neighborhood once a month.

Oceanport Councilman Michael Mahon has announced that the Monmouth County Mosquito Commission will be coming to the borough to look at areas with standing water. So far, four requests have come from the public reporting areas of standing water that should be looked at. Mahon noted that residents should take their own steps in removing standing water from around their own homes in order to prepare for what is expected to be a heavy mosquito season.

Oceanport Councilman Philip D. Apruzzi noted that the police department is urging residents to take extra safety precautions due to recent break-ins in the borough. Some precautions to take, said Apruzzi, are to lock doors, keep lights on at appropriate times, and look for strangers in the neighborhood.

All Oceanport Borough parks playground areas and equipment have been upgraded. The borough is expected to go to bid on plans for the improvement of Blackberry Bay Park on July 1.

Oceanport Mayor Gordon N. Gemma has made the following appointments to the recreation committee: Peter Dellera Sr. and William Johnson, to fill unexpired terms ending in December 2005; and George Karpus, to fill an unexpired term ending in December 2004.
