The late actress was one of a kind.

America lost a true screen idol Sunday when Katherine Hepburn died at the age of 96. She was a marvel who commanded your attention when on screen. Not the traditional beauty, necessarily, and definitely someone who would not be starring in "Charlie’s Angels," Hepburn was the epitome of the strong woman before that was fashionable on screen.
Her films with Spencer Tracy (in particular, "Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner" and "Adam’s Rib"), her amazing performance in "The African Queen" with Humphrey Bogart and in "Long Day’s Journey Into Night," her television performance in "The Glass Menagerie" she was a remarkable actress whose like will not come round again.
Here is a good editorial in The Boston Globe on the great actress.
