NORTH BRUNSWICK — Officials put their faith in township employee Lisa Gerhertz, quickly appointing her to a new position.

The Township Council voted unanimously to appoint Gerhertz as the new municipal clerk during a special meeting Monday night.

"I’m very honored and very excited that the mayor and council had the confidence to appoint me," Gerhertz said. "I look forward to conquering the challenge."

Gerhertz replaces longtime township clerk Helen Folek, who retired June 30.

"I have very big shoes to fill," Gerhertz said. "Helen is highly respected in town."

Folek helped train Gerhertz, who received her municipal clerk certification in October 2002.

Gerhertz attended Rutgers University, New Brunswick, for four months to complete the courses necessary to pass the six-hour long municipal clerk state exam.

Gerhertz, who has been working in the municipal clerk’s office since August 1999, said Mayor David Spaulding encouraged her to continue her education to receive the municipal clerk certification.

Spaulding will swear Gerhertz in during the regular Township Council meeting at 7 p.m. this coming Monday. Folek will be present to hold the Bible.

Having lived in North Brunswick her entire life, Gerhertz said she recognizes the degree of service the residents of the town deserve and expect, and she looks forward to continuing in that tradition.
