The American Red Cross Jersey Coast Chapter, Tinton Falls, urges all residents to learn critical preparedness and safety tips because of the toll lightning takes on residents across the country each year.
Before lightning strikes:
• Keep an eye on the sky, and look for darkening skies and light flashes; listen for thunder.
• If you hear thunder, go to safe shelter immediately.
• Listen to NOAA Weather Radio, local radio or TV for forecasts.
When a storm approaches:
• Find shelter in a building or car.
• Stay off the telephone and unplug appliances.
• Avoid taking a bath or shower and running water.
• Turn off air conditioners, as power surges can overload a compressor.
• Draw blinds and shades over windows to prevent glass from shattering into the home.
If caught outside:
• If in woods, take shelter under shorter trees.
• If boating or swimming, get to land and find shelter.
• Go to a low-lying, open place away from trees, poles or metal objects.
• Be a small target — squat low to the ground, and place hands on knees with head between them.
• Do not lie flat on ground — this will make you a larger target.
