Emergency services director honored by American Heart Association

L. Scott Larsen, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., director of the department of emergency medicine at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel, received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Research and Education at the annual American Heart Association Heart Rock Café Dinner Dance held at the Sheraton Eatontown Hotel and Conference Center, located on Route 35.

Larsen is the medical director of Bayshore’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support training center and the Bayshore Area EMT program; chairman of the Institutional Review Board (IRB); medical director of the AED program and medical director of employee health at Bayshore Community Hospital.

Dr. Larsen spearheaded ongoing clinical trials at Bayshore Community Hospital. He was instrumental in the approval of anti-infective and cardiovascular therapies including TNKase, a clot-buster, and other cutting-edge therapeutic modalities, including potent antibiotics such as Avelox and Zyvox, that allow for more effective treatment of pneumonia and resistant infections.

In addition to personally conducting research, Dr. Larsen teaches research methodology to physicians, nurses and paramedics. He is actively engaged at the national level, teaching research for the Drug Information Association and the American College of Research Professionals.

Committed to his profession, Dr. Larsen speaks frequently to national physician and pharmaceutical organizations. An ardent publisher, Dr. Larsen has presented a myriad papers with subjects varying from clinical research protocol to emergency medicine management. Most recently, he presented an abstract at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Since 1985, Dr. Larsen has been associated with Emergency Medical Associates (EMA) of New Jersey; a democratic, physician-owned and governed group that provides nationally recognized emergency services to hospitals and health systems.

In addition to his physician responsibilities and sitting on the board of directors for EMA, Dr. Larsen oversees Fusion Clinical Trials in Red Bank, another division of EMA, that manages clinical trials in the field ranging from acute illness and injury to health and fitness medicine for nationally known pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Larsen’s professional society memberships include the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Physicians and the Drug Information Association.

After receiving his undergraduate degree at Richard Stockton State College in Pomona, Dr. Larsen received his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Columbia University Affiliated Hospitals. Dr. Larsen is also a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
