MANALAPAN — An extension of the grace period for paying residential property tax bills has been approved for the third quarter beginning Aug. 1.

In a resolution passed at the July 23 Township Committee meeting, members of the governing body voted 4-0 to approve an extension of the grace period for paying August 2003 property tax payments.

Mayor Drew Shapiro was not present at the meeting.

"Because the state aid figures were not available, the tax bills were delayed," said Tara Lovrich, assistant business administrator. "Therefore, the township felt it was necessary to extend the grace period."

When New Jersey delayed the release of official state aid data, which must be inserted on the tax bills as a matter of public information, the tax bills were then printed and mailed to property owners on July 15.

However, a resolution passed by the Township Committee on Jan. 6 provides that interest on delinquent tax payments will be charged for all payments received after Aug. 10, the end of the usual 10-day grace period.

In accordance with state law, the committee has extended the grace period for paying the August 2003 property tax to Sept. 2. After that date, payments for the third quarter will be delinquent and interest penalties will accrue.

In other township business, Donald Holland has been appointed to the municipal agricultural advisory committee. The three- to five-person committee was established in order to make the township eligible for the state Planning Incentive Grant. The majority of members on the committee must engage in farming and own a portion of the land that they farm.

It was noted that Lou Langlais has been appointed as member to the township transportation committee to complete the unexpired term of Stephen Goldwasser which will expire on Dec. 31, 2004.

The township has also appointed John Marini as a building subcode official. Marini will receive a salary of $54,000.
