EAST BRUNSWICK — Three area men have been charged in the armed robbery of a college student in the Bronx, N.Y.
Police apprehended the three man — Fady Gohbrial, 19, of Cypress Lane in East Brunswick; Everett M. Simmons, 25, of Genesis Street in Manalapan; and Wayne V. Hamilton, 19, of Station Street, also in Manalapan — at 3:37 a.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of Loehmann’s Plaza, Route 18. Police said that about two hours earlier, the suspects had used a black BB gun to hold up a St. John’s University student and take his belongings.
The men were arrested after East Brunswick Patrolman Donald Carruth, who was traveling in a marked patrol car, came upon a 1989 Mercedes-Benz that was parked in the Loehmann’s lot even though the shopping center was closed for the night. Carruth thought it was suspicious for a car to be parked there at that hour, according to Lt. Geraldine Garrett.
Police said a man, later identified as Hamilton, was walking around the car at the time of the patrolman’s arrival. When Carruth investigated, Hamilton told him that his friends, Simmons and Gohbrial, were sleeping in the car. He reportedly told the officer that the trio had just returned from New Brunswick, and that they had been in the Bronx before that.
When Patrolman Craig Hoover arrived, the officers woke up the two men. As Simmons, the back-seat passenger, stepped from the car, Carruth allegedly observed the handle of a gun sticking out from underneath a black gym bag located on the back seat. The gun was retrieved and found to be a BB gun, police said.
The black gym bag allegedly contained a wallet with identification from a St. John’s student who lives in the Bronx. When police contacted that student, he reportedly told them that at 1:30 a.m., he was robbed at gunpoint on 188th street in the Bronx. Garrett said the suspects likely used the BB gun in the robbery.
Taken from the victim was his wallet, containing a $20 bill, a couple of one-dollar bills, driver’s license, Social Security card, college identification and Metro Card. These items were allegedly recovered in the black gym bag. The description of the alleged robbers that was provided to police by the victim resembled that of the three suspects, police said.
Police immediately charged the three men with possession of stolen property and possession of a BB gun. All three men were lodged in the Middlesex County Correction Center, North Brunswick, in lieu of $100,000 bail, with no 10 percent option.
Later Tuesday, Garrett said, police officers from the 48th precinct of New York City were in East Brunswick to investigate the case, and they brought armed robbery charges against each of the suspects.
Police said that the Mercedes the men had used belonged to Gohbrial’s uncle.
