Fashion historian and costume designer Barbara Meyer Darlin will present a program titled "Unlacing the Victorian Woman" at noon on Aug. 20 at the Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St.
The program, which has been described as a one-woman show, a social history lesson, a conceptual performance/lecture and a Victorian "striptease," will provide a glimpse into Victorian modes and morals. Darlin will change, on stage, into the outfits, complete with the "unmentionables," worn by a turn-of-the-century woman during a typical day.
Audience volunteers will help place the corset and hook the garments.
Throughout the program, Darlin will explain women’s roles in Victorian society as well as the routines, social customs and etiquette of the times.
The event is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Admission is free. The public is invited. Reservations are recommended. Refreshments will be served.
