Scouts fund-raiser a success

Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts Inc. held its 12th annual Girl Scout Golf Classic at Knob Hill Golf Club in Manalapan and raised more than $35,000 to benefit programs offered to local girls in Monmouth and northern Ocean counties.

"All of us at Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts are extremely pleased with the success of this year’s Girl Scout Golf Classic," said Susan H. McClure, chief executive officer of Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts. "I would like to thank all the sponsors, golfers and members of the volunteer committee on behalf of the 12,000 local girls who will benefit from their generosity."

According to a press release, a variety of sponsors lent their support to this year’s Girl Scout Golf Classic. Top sponsors included Gold Sponsor Abbington Associates Inc. and two Silver Sponsors: Coastal Title Agency and Alice Guttler. All design and commercial printing services for the Girl Scout Golf Classic were donated by Keefe Printing and Graphics.

Golf carts were sponsored by Commerce Bank. A continental breakfast was sponsored by Faridy, Veisz, Fraytak; Awards Luncheon Sponsors included K. Hovnanian Companies, Network 1 Financial Advisors and OceanFirst Bank. The Beat-the-Pro Sponsor was Norkus Foodtown, while the refreshment carts were sponsored by Amboy National Bank and Shrewsbury Bicycles and Executive Bike Tours.

Hole-in-One Sponsors included Damian Sylvia and Edward Dowling Jr., Golf Headquarters and Paul DeFelice of Circle Chevrolet. The Putting Green Sponsors were Clayton and Son Funeral Home and Carton, Arvantis, McGreevy, Argeris, Zager and Aikins. Companies that purchased both a hole sponsorship with a flag and a tee sponsorship were Colts Neck Consulting Group and New Jersey Natural Gas Company. The Girl Scout Golf Classic Committee was co-chaired by Dr. Peter Bastardo, the Freehold Township superintendent of schools, and Richard Hunt of Network 1 Financial Advisors. Members of the committee included Robin Fitzmaurice, Shrewsbury State Bank; Lou Grob, House of Hearing Aids; Alice Guttler, CentraState Healthcare System; Tom Hayes, New Jersey Natural Gas Company; Carole Horowitz, Commerce Bank; Bob Kave, Philmont Country Club; Kevin Keefe, Keefe Printing and Graphics; Peter LaFrance, Mehr, LaFrance and Basen; Bob McGirr, Clayton Funeral Home; Gerard Norkus, Norkus Foodtown; Leslie Preston, Due Process Stable; and Tom Tyler, PNC Bank.

Trophies were awarded by the commit­tee to a variety of top golfers. The first-place female foursome was Tonnine Fogliano, Bette Gasarch, Roni Jones and Millie Selinger. The first-place male four­some was Dan Gartin, Lou Grob, Tony Palladino and Larry Puorro. The first-place mixed foursome was Kay Charles, Joe Finn, Bill Jasco and Jackie St. Angel. In addition, the "longest drive" award for women and men was earned by Linda Kirby and Robert Bolig, respectively. The "closest to the pin" award for women and men was earned by Roni Jones and Sean Boyce. Finally, the "straightest drive" award for women and men was earned by Joan Disler and Tony Petretta.

Participants in the Girl Scout Golf Classic were able to bid on many silent auction items donated by local businesses.
