FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — State champion Little League baseball players were honored by the Township Committee at a meeting Sept. 9. The 11- and 12-year-olds who play in the Freehold Township Little League were each given a certificate of achievement in recognition of winning the 2003 New Jersey Little League State Championship.
Noting that there are many Little League teams in the state, Mayor Raymond Kershaw said it is quite an accomplishment to be the best. He commended the coaches for their hard work.
"It takes hours and hours to get the boys to perform so well," he said.
Kershaw read a proclamation from the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders that declared Sept. 9, Freehold Township Little League New Jersey State Champions Day.
After winning the state championship, the Freehold Township squad advanced to the Little League Northeast Regional competition in Bristol, Ct. The team was trying to earn a berth in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., but was eliminated after going 1-3 in regional play.
The team members are Mark Sorbara, Anthony Cirillo, Justin Perez, Austin Sneyers, Michael Tumminia, Michael Miranda, Shawn Purves, Stephen Talbott, Daniel Klinsky, Christopher Bresnahan, Johnathon Morrill and Gerald Plescia. Manager Anthony Cirillo and coaches Glen Purves and Anthony Piccola also received certificates.
