United Way
announces its
’03-04 funding

The Board of Directors from United Way of Monmouth County officially announced the funding of 77 programs from 59 nonprofit health and human service agencies within Monmouth County for the 2003-04 funding cycle.

The average grant was $10,214 with the total amount distributed among all 77 programs equaling $800,000, according to a press release. Twelve agencies will receive funding for the first time, of the 77 programs, 47 of those programs received funding in 2002. This year more than 20 agencies requested multiple funding. The largest grant was given to LADACIN, formerly known as Cerebral Palsy of Monmouth County, for $41,000 for its early intervention program and its residential nursing service program.

"This task is one of the most difficult tasks we put before our volunteers. Serving on the committee, reviewing the programs, requesting funds, deciding eligibility and trying to fund each program to the fullest with the limited funds we have available is really a tremendous undertaking. We work for months to ensure that the process is handled professionally and with accountability," said Christine Jagerburger, director of community impact at the United Way.

United Way allocates its unrestricted funds through an open competitive grant process. It identifies high quality programs that address critical community impact areas and provide significant measurable outcomes, according to the press release.

Payments will be made on a quarterly basis starting in late September. United Way retains the right to modify the payment schedule based on the applicant’s need. In such cases payment of up to 20 percent of the total award may be made at the beginning of the grant period.
