Chamber music series announces 2003-04 schedule

The Chamber Music Series of the Monmouth Arts Foundation has announced its schedule of performances by chamber groups of worldwide recognition.

This is the Monmouth Arts Foundation’s 45th season of chamber music presentations. The funds from state and local subsidies that once sustained the series have been greatly reduced, and the foundation has become more dependent than ever on paid audience attendance.

All concerts are presented at the Performing Arts Center of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, on Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. The concerts are free to young children and $5 per concert for students up to 23 years of age. A regular four-concert (full season) adult subscription is $60.

The Chiara String Quartet, which will perform Sept. 28, was the first-prize winner in the 2002 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and has performed live on National Public Radio’s "Performance Today." They will perform Mozart’s "Hoffmeister" quartet.

On Nov. 16, the Corigliano Quartet will perform works by Mozart, William Bolcom and Mendelssohn. The New York Times called them "musicians who have an excellent, smooth sense of ensemble."

On Feb. 8, Trio Solisti will perform "Café Music" by P. Schoenfeld, and works by Brahms and Mendelssohn. Their collaborative performances include sessions with Yo-Yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich and Leonard Slatkin.

The Zephyros Wind Quintet will perform works by Beethoven, Gyorgy Organ, Mozart, Jean Francais, and Lalo Schifrin on March 21. In 1995, they won the first and grand prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, becoming the first wind quintet in the competition’s 22-year history to do so.
