Edison resident: Don’t cancel senior shoppers’ shuttle

As a senior citizen in Edison, I was appalled to learn that the Spadoro administration is cancelling the senior shoppers’ shuttle for residents from the Village Court Senior Apartments. Many people depend upon that shuttle to get to and from the supermarket on a regular basis. They have no other means of getting their groceries.

We seniors built this country. We served in our nation’s wars against fascism and communism. Now this is how our current Township Council thanks us.

I also saw the comments in the paper by members of the Spadoro administration saying that the senior shuttle was "demeaning and degrading" because it is "segregated," meaning that only seniors are allowed to ride the shuttle.

Who do they think is going to ride a senior shuttle?

There is nothing demeaning or degrading about a program designed to help seniors. Do they also think that Medicare and Social Security are demeaning and degrading?

I also saw the Spadoro Democrats’ assurance that all will be well. They tell us the shuttle will be "replaced" with a mass transit bus system. But they warn us that the bus drivers in a mass transit system won’t be able to help seniors.

Is this what we’ve come to in Edison? Has Edison really become Jersey City or Newark? Do we really treat one another so coldly that we can’t help one another? Are these Democrats really so enamored of their mass transit system that they don’t want to help seniors?

The Republican candidates for council say they would support the senior shuttle. Frankly, I trust the Republicans to keep Edison small. The Democrats seem to approve every application from every developer. They think that mass transit is better than a little senior shuttle.

In the many years that I’ve been in Edison, I’ve seen the Democrats turn my little town into an overcrowded city full of rude drivers and too much traffic.

I think it is time that we retire the Democrats on the council.
