Nov. 28, 5 p.m.: Some reading for the holiday weekend

A couple of columns worth checking out while you’re waiting on line at the mall.

Two items of note worth reading, given that many of you will be waiting on line with nothing but bad Christmas music to occupy your minds:
   • Today’s column by E.J. Dionne Jr. in the Washington Post makes the case for fixing the presidential financing system to encourage candidates to stay in the race. Yes, Howard Dean and John Kerry have opted out of the system this year, but they are doing so in reaction to the Bush fund-raising monster. Staying in would have left them with a paltry $45 million to compete against the more than $200 million the president is expected to raise. The entire thing is obscene.
   • And from Common Dreams News Center, a piece from Bill Moyers on media and democracy that is a must read. It was adapted from a commentary he is slated to give on tonight’s Now on PBS. Check it out
