EDISON — Yelencsics Park is officially open again after the completion of renovations.

Many were present on Nov. 21 to dedicate the renovations to the park, which is located behind the senior center on Woodbridge Avenue. Included were Mayor George A. Spadoro, the Bonhamtown Senior Citizens Club members, Bonhamtown neighbors and the family of the late Edison Mayor Anthony Yelencsics, after whom the park was named.

The renovation project, which cost the township approximately $250,000, included a new walking path, a bocce ball court, a full basketball court, new trashcans, picnic tables, a horseshoe area, three barbecue grills, shuffleboard courts and sheltered benches.

The renovations also included an expanded parking lot, and new trees and grass.

There is also a new tot lot compliant with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, officials said.

"Mayor Yelencsics gave so much to Edison in his 23 years as mayor," Spadoro said.

"His contributions helped make Edison the vibrant community it is today. Renovating this park is a fitting and proper tribute to all that Tony Yelencsics and the whole Yelencsics family have done for Edison’s seniors and the Bonhamtown community."

Yelencsics served as mayor of Edison Township from 1958 to 1960 and again from 1978 until his death in 1989.

According to officials, Yelencsics Park is the 23rd park the township has refurbished in the past seven years. The work was done as part of a township park improvement plan which aims to renovate all 36 township parks.
