Some township karate students plan to kick for a cause.
Pupils at the Family Karate Center on Ridge Road are accepting sponsors for a kick-a-thon to raise money for a trust fund to be used for the college education of the three children of South Brunswick Athletic Association Vice President Gary D. Mariano, who died Oct. 8 after fighting cancer.
Mr. Mariano is survived by his wife, Christine Mariano, and three children, Michael, 14, David, 11, and Jenna, 7.
Sponsors will pledge a particular amount for each kick a student performs at a kick-a-thon scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 11.
Those wishing to donate may also do so at the event, said Rich Klimkiewicz, an SBAA board member who initiated the event.
Mr. Klimkiewicz said the kick-a-thon offers township residents an opportunity to express their gratitude for the time Mr. Mariano volunteered. In addition to serving the SBAA, Mr. Mariano was a baseball, basketball and flag football coach for many years.
"It’s time maybe the township turned around and did something to help the Mariano family," Mr. Klimkiewicz said.
