NORTH BRUNSWICK — The Township Council introduced an ordinance that would prohibit parking on specific township roadways during snowfall.

"When snow accumulates such that it covers the street," the township would prohibit residents and other motorists from parking vehicles on both sides of 17 township streets, according to Department of Public Works Director Dick Fowler.

Fowler suggested the institution of the ordinance in an effort to provide for more efficient and better snow removal in these areas.

"Residents always complain that they have to dig their cars out of the mounds of snow created by the plows," Fowler said. "Now all they will have to worry about is shoveling their driveways and getting out before the plow comes around again."

Fowler said the township’s Department of Emergency Management would also benefit from the ordinance.

"The ordinance would help emergency workers to transport food, fuel, medical care, fire, health and police protection, and other vital facilities to township residents during a snow emergency," Fowler said.

In the event that the ordinance passes, the township would prohibit parking during a snowstorm on Cranbury Cross Road, Hermann Road, Nassau Street, Newton Street, Ridgewood Avenue, Village Drive, Independence Boulevard, Wood Avenue, Aaron Road, Hartland Commons, Hidden Lake Drive, Riverbend Drive, Schmidts Lane, Willowbrook Drive, Axel Avenue, Huron Road, and Linwood Place from Hermann Road to Cranbury Cross Road and Glenridge Avenue to Woodland Avenue.

The township would erect "No parking during a snowstorm" signs on these streets, Fowler said.

Any vehicle parked or standing in violation of the ordinance would be towed away at the owner’s expense, Fowler said.

Township officials may provide parking for residents in township park lots and other public parking lots during a snowstorm, Fowler said.
